Chris found he cared little for himself. He would use his talents to make sure D.J. survived her association with him. She might be a tough cop, but right now she was as vulnerable as a newborn babyand it was all his fault. |

He looked down at D.J. She lay so still; if her chest hadn't risen and fallen in an even cadence beneath the white sheet, he would fear she'd slipped away from him forever. Despite the knowledge such a move could be disastrous, Chris took her pale, cool hand in his. |

At his touch, she shifted. Her fingers flexed, enfolding his with her own, and a smile tilted the corners of her lips. |

Chris stared in amazement. He'd never seen D.J. smile like thata smile of true joy. He wished he could see the same joy reflected in her eyes, but he knew too well the depth of sadness within D.J.'s soul. That same sadness resided in his own heart. Like Sleeping Beauty, she awaited a prince to set her heart free. Too bad all she had was Christian McCall. Not much of a prince. But what the hell? |

He leaned down and stroked her lips with his own. The contrast of her cool, slim fingers clinging to his and her warm, full lips so still beneath his mouth made him pull back, unnerved. |

But D.J. slept onthe curse unbroken. |

Ah, well, what had he expected? Eternal devotion? Undying love? From D.J.? He let out what he thought would be a derisive snort. Instead, the sound he emitted wavered into a hopeless sigh. |

Once more; just one more kiss while she's sleeping. One more caress when she isn't spitting mad or dazed |
